Year 3 Whanganui UCOL School of
Fashion student Tasha Simpson has won the Runner Up placing
at the Villa Maria Cult Couture fashion show in Auckland.
It is the second prestigious place win for a Whanganui UCOL School of Fashion student this year. In September, second year student Michelle Smith took second place in the Men’s Wear section at the national Westfield Style Pasifika catwalk show in Auckland.
Whanganui UCOL School of Fashion Acting Programme Leader, Cassandra Knight, says the Villa Maria Cult Couture show is also a highly rated national fashion event, She says Tasha’s win is a great success for her and for the school.
“Tasha was competing against established designers and artists from around the country. So to get a second placing is a wonderful achievement. Tasha has shown that the skills she has learnt can cut it against the best.”
Tasha’s outfit, entitled Street Wear with Class, competed in the On the Streets category.
Cassandra says Tasha is well known for her excellent design and construction skills. “The two piece outfit is made from black velvet and denim and incorporates a corset with a metal busk down the front.” Tasha designed and screen printed the patterns on the fabric herself.
Four designs from Whanganui UCOL’s School of Fashion were part of the Auckland show. Tasha had another design selected in the Formally Yours category, and an outfit designed by second year students Caitlin Harvey and Alice Walter was selected for the Recycled Fashion section. Fashion Lecturer Sue Walker also had a design selected in the Recycled Fashion section.
The Whanganui UCOL fashion students will show off their work from throughout the year, at the I’ll Eat My Hat fashion show at the Wanganui Opera House on 21 November. Highlights include the final collections by 10 third year students completing the Bachelor of Fashion, and the Westfield Style Pasifika entries.
