Design student out to rock the world

Design student Josh Wallace has earned a place at the world’s largest student design conference.

Josh will represent UCOL’s Whanganui School of Design at the 2009 AGIdeas conference in Melbourne in May. He will be one of an international group of student committee members, from selected, high achieving design schools around the world.

The honour also gives him the opportunity to work with design studios in Melbourne, with other student committee members.

Josh says he expects to be “seriously humbled” on the trip, “but at the same time I reckon I will learn a lot about the direction that design is taking at the moment in different parts of the world. It will be awesome to see what is influencing designers across the globe.”

He says he is really excited about being chosen. “And the fact that AGIdeas selected us as one of their choices as a top design school is wicked. I'm sure that if they could afford it, the Whanganui School of Design would be sending every student over there because it will be a really good learning experience.”

Josh is just finishing his second year of study for the Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design and will be half way through his third year when he attends the conference.

After graduating, his long term goals are to work overseas to gain experience before coming back to New Zealand to start up his own design studio. He says his fellow students are also aiming high. “I’ve seen firsthand that the Whanganui School of Design is full of very talented designers that I'm sure are going to rock the globe like me, once they graduate,” he says.

AGIdeas is the largest annual international design event held in Australia and the world’s largest student design event. It presents a series of events for designers who are seeking inspiration, for emerging designers to explore the possibilities of international careers in design, and for companies looking to embrace design as an economic driver.
