Wintec To Launch Hare Puke Maori Leadership
Scholarship
A Wintec Maori Staff Scholarship is to be
established from 2009 in memory and recognition of the
valued work of Kaumatua Hare Puke who died in this
month.
Wintec is inviting applications from members of staff to undertake a period of study overseas towards career enhancement at Wintec
Chief executive Mark Flowers said Maori staff from across the organisation could apply.
“The objective of the Maori Staff Scholarship is to develop Maori leadership in tertiary education in the region through the provision of opportunities for advanced professional development.
He said the scholarship is to be awarded annually and will enable Maori staff, academic or general, to take leave to undertake higher education study. The scholarship will be directed at such staff who have actively encouraged indigenous students to participate in higher education and complete their studies.
“The contribution Hare Puke made to Wintec, to the city and to wide ranging communities was immense. He was an extraordinarily knowledgeable and wise person and the positive effects of his work with our organisation and many others will, without a doubt, be enduring. With this scholarship Wintec wishes to honour that and to provide a means by which members of our Maori community may gain leadership skills which in turn can be applied positively for Maori.
The Hare Puke Leadership Scholarship will be launched in March 2009.
