Hurricanes Support UCOL Wairarapa’s Big Open Day

Members of the Hurricanes will take time out from training for next month’s Super 14 to support UCOL Wairarapa’s biggest ever Open Day.

Apart from the Hurricanes, the summer event on 30 January will feature music from local band Deaf Lemon, giveaways and prizes, and a complimentary sausage sizzle for the hungry.

Campus Manager Angela Hewitt says it’s a great opportunity for Wairarapa people to come along, meet the Hurricanes and just hang out on the green and leafy campus. “We want people to use the Open Day to have some fun and experience the great atmosphere at one of Masterton’s great assets.”

For those making study plans for this year, Angela says there will be displays and staff on hand with information on options. Wairarapa UCOL is offering 19 programmes this year, including new programmes in Performing Arts and Exercise, Nanny and Sport Performance, as well as iconic programmes like Nursing.

Angela says with NCEA results now out, it’s absolutely the right time for school leavers to decide on their study plans for the year. “We can help with information on each individual programme and we can also advise on job opportunities when students complete their study. That’s a particularly important factor now, with uncertainly about employment prospects in some sectors – but growth expected in others, like Nursing and Early Childhood Education and Care,” she says.

People who want to take advantage of UCOL’s Retraining and Job Guarantee offers can also find out more at the Open Day. The Retraining offer is available to anyone made redundant after 1September last year and covers normal tuition fees for all programmes, apart from student association fees and any programme-related costs.

The Job Guarantee means that people who can’t find employment in their study area within 13 weeks of successfully completing a programme started in 2009 can then apply to enrol on another programme without paying further tuition fees in 2010.

As well as preparing for the Open Day, Angela says staff are busy getting ready for this year’s intake of students, with most programmes starting on 16 February. “That includes finishing the big upgrade of our student Common Room. It’s being revamped and refurbished to make it the perfect place for students to sit around and study, network with their classmates, grab a bite to eat or just take time out and watch television.”

The UCOL Wairarapa Open Day runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday 30 January.
