New Learning Hub for UCOL Students
New Learning Hub for UCOL Students
When UCOL students start their study in February, they will find that the space formerly called the Atrium has been transformed. The year will get off to a great start as students discover the possibilities available through the new social and learning space at the heart of the campus, the Learning Hub.
The Learning Hub brings together many of UCOL’s student support services, provides a comfortable lounge area, more than 60 computer stations, wireless access for laptops available for students’ use and barista coffee for staff and students.
Project Manager Karyn Thomson says the Learning Hub is designed as a space students can meet up, relax, and have a different environment in which to study. It has a larger purpose, to provide an environment that focuses on student success and achievement. “It is not just a way to redefine space, it will change the way students, processes, support and systems work.
“The Learning Hub will be the heart of UCOL Palmerston North. It’s a really exciting resource for our students that we predict will be well used and change the way student support and students work. We’ve had a look at similar spaces in other campuses around New Zealand and internationally, and we’ve brought the best of those ideas home to our students to give them the best possible learning environment for their needs,” Karyn says.
The redesign of the former Atrium has been achieved through the vision of Brian Elliott and Design Group Architects who were the original architects of UCOL’s inner city campus. The concept of an “inner street” has been transformed into a learning environment that makes exciting new use of a wonderful space.
