Bachelor of Nursing (Māori): New Programme Manager

Bachelor of Nursing (Māori) appoints Programme Manager.

The Bachelor of Nursing (Māori) is set to begin in July 2009, this month a Programme Manager has being an appointed; Hemaima Hughes.

“It is an honour to be here and I am very passionate about being involved in yet another Maori nursing degree programme focused on recruiting, preparing, retaining and valuing Maori nurses, says Hughes. These nurses will be instrumental in delivering effective appropriate health care services to Maori and others to improve health and wellbeing outcomes, and reduce the health inequality disparity gap.”

Hughes has a Master of Arts in Nursing from Victoria University. She has an extensive background in nursing, working as a nurse educator, in curriculum design and development, as a current practice clinician, researcher, in leadership and management, governance, and Maori health in primary, secondary and tertiary sectors.

Whitireia will become one of only two educational institutes to offer a Bachelor of Nursing (Māori). Whitireia is already a leading provider of undergraduate and postgraduate health programmes, including a Bachelor of Nursing and a Bachelor of Nursing (Pacific).

The aim of this programme is to ensure the provision of a qualification that prepares graduates to address the health needs of Māori within the broader Aotearoa society. The programme acknowledges the distinct skill-set required by Māori nurses and this is reflected in the curriculum design and the teaching, learning and support environment inherent in the delivery styles chosen. Having graduates able to work with equal competence in both worlds will make a significant contribution to not only Māori health but also New Zealand’s health systems.
