Journalism programmes tailored for modern media.
Whitireia Journalism programmes equip students with skills to tackle the modern media market. The programme focuses on multi-media, ensuring students are capable of using and writing for new technology platforms, using the tools of the web.
A graduate of the National Diploma in Journalism (multi-media,) Luke Appleby has written a blog about his diploma – proving that his hard work and newfound knowledge is already being put to good use.
On his own personal blog ‘Applebyline’, Appleby posted a blog ‘Whitireia journalism school diploma review’, a programme which he has just completed and graduated from on 26 March.
“It has been enlightening, empowering, entertaining and expertly taught,” reads Appleby’s blog. “As the course progressed it was obvious that this course is far ahead of the others when it comes to educating reporters on usage of different media.”
Highlights for Appleby included “having a multi-media recording and editing booth at the back of our classroom, turning our classroom into a news room on election night, internships at paper and radio stations and meeting people.”
The Whitireia Journalism programme also has its own website, Newswire, published by Programme Manager Jim Tucker. As part of the course, students are expected to write news articles for the website. The site provides up-to-date, factual, multi-media articles for anyone to access. Work from the students has appeared in all the local newspapers over the year and Newswire has become a reputable new source and a showcase of the skills and style of the next generation of journalists.
“With an ever-growing news website, a mixing board, portable high-quality audio recorders, a 3CCD camcorder and a handful of good microphones, I think the next course is going to thrive” says Appleby.
