Whitireia Students Bring Home Culinary Medals
Whitireia Students Bring Home Culinary Medals Once Again
It was another fantastic achievement for Whitireia Community Polytechnic’s School of Professional Cookery at the Wellington Culinary Fare during the weekend of 9 May. A total of 7 medals were won by students from the Porirua and Kapiti campuses.
“It was a wonderful achievement and I am always so impressed with the professionalism, expertise and extremely high standards that are displayed by our students, who for most have only been studying for just over 3 months,” said Lisa Harris-Powell Programme Manager.
Hyeong Jin Chung only began the Certificate in Professional Cookery in February, but with plenty of dedication and passion, she brought home a Bronze Medal for the Superb Soup section and a Silver medal and title of Class Winner in the Hot Chicken Brunch section.
Classmates Stephen Deller and Hayley Butter competed alongside each other in the Pasta Main Course section, which was also sponsored by Whitireia, both bringing home Silver medals.
Kapiti Campus students
Victoria Meier and Louisa Smiley entered the Junior Section
of the Innovative Fresh Fruit Flan Competition. Smiley
submitted a Pina-Colada style fruit flan and Meier produced
a nutty, orange-chocolate flan, complete with Grand Mariner
infused cream.
Tutor Rod Sergent said “It is great to see them competing against industry professionals. In the past our students have done really well and come home with medals they have won over people who have been five years in the industry!” And indeed they did, both Meier and Smiley won a silver medal in the Fresh Fruit Flan Section, along with Porirua student Jade Stevens who also won silver.
