Future Direction Of ICT Education In Secondary Schools
Formal recommendations
for the future of ICT education in secondary schools have
been made to the Ministry of Education by an expert panel of
education and technology leaders.
The Digital Technologies Expert Panel (DTEP) was convened by the Ministry of Education in November 2008 to provide advice on the future of Digital Technologies (computing, ICT and electronics) in secondary schools. It includes representatives from universities, polytechnics, secondary schools, unions, sector agencies and industry organisations.
``These recommendations will provide guidance on the revision of existing assessment standards and the creation of new Digital Technologies standards,’’ says DTEP Chair Marg McLeod.
``Ministry officials and experts have been working closely with DTEP towards the development of Digital Technologies’ achievement standards to meet assessment needs.’’
Manager Secondary Outcomes Tony Turnock said he expects achievement standards for NCEA Level 1 to be available in draft form in July 2010 for use in schools in 2011. Standards for Levels 2 and 3 will be available in subsequent years. These will be supported with appropriate professional support materials such as teaching and learning guides.
``It has been agreed that this work would, at this stage, be best developed within the Technology learning area,’’ said Marg McLeod.
