From noon on Friday 25th September students can hire bikes at very cheap rates for periods of four weeks to 24 weeks. They will also receive a helmet, bike pump, lock and keys, free insurance cover, free service checks, free on-campus parking, puncture kit and cycle maps, bike care tips and a free backpack or Avanti visibility jacket. The Whitireia Independent Student Association and NZ Green Bike Trust are launching this new ‘Go Green Rental Bike Programme.
The Go Green tertiary rental bike programme is a low cost sustainable transportation alternative for students and staff to cycle to campus rather than using a car or public transport. The Go Green programme is made possible with funding from the Porirua City Council, the NZ Transport Association and Whitireia Community Polytechnic.
“It is a positive example of a community-led initiative that has wide-spread support from central and local government and cycling and health organisations that will contribute to a safer, quieter, less polluted environment for us to live in,” says Whitireia Chief Executive Don Campbell.
At the Launch on Friday speeches will be given from Whitireia Deputy Chief Executive Arthur Graves, Loretta Ryder from Whitireia Independent Student Association, Local MP Winnie Laban, John Poppleton Chairman of NZ Green Bike Trust. Porirua City Council Mayor Jenny Brash will officially launch the programme with a ribbon cutting.
