24 Hours "Singing Peace Around the World"!**
Students, staff and trainees at Mt Eden's Maria Montessori Education Foundation (MMEF) were "singing for peace" today as part of a worldwide 24 hour project as part of the United Nations International Day of Peace.
Montessori schools from around the world came together to "sing peace around the world" -- each of them allotted a five-minute time-slot in which to "keep the chain of singing unbroken" for the twenty-fours of the project.
New Zealand Montessori schools from Christchurch to Auckland began the project at 11am this morning, and at 11: 25am Director of Training at the MMEF teacher training college, Cheryl Ferreira, led off staff and students as they "sang their hearts out for peace with voices like Tuis!"
The Singing for Peace Project is part of the Montessori mission of "Education for Peace." Dr Maria Montessori, who began the worldwide Montessori movement in Italy at the beginning of last century, maintained "that mankind can hope for a solution to its problems, among which the most urgent are those of peace and unity, only by turning its attention and energies to the discovery of the child and to the development of the great potentialities of the human personality in the course of its formation." The organisation sent up in 1929 to maintain the integrity of her life's work, Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), reaffirmed this year their goal "to help all the world's children to grow free from fears and anxieties, remain open to others and live happy lives in a more peaceful world."
Students in training at MMEF's Mt Eden home are imbued with this goal, said Director Training Cheryl Ferreira, and overjoyed to be part of today's "singing peace around the world."
