Chinese UCOL students' studies delayed by coffee

The coffee and cuisine demands of the 2010 Asia Games have delayed the arrival of a cohort of Chinese students to study Professional Cookery at Whanganui UCOL.

The 17 students will be the largest single group of international students to study at Whanganui UCOL’s School of Catering and Hospitality.

Programme Leader Tim Snape says the original arrival date for the seventeen students from GhangZhou Vocational School of Tourism and Business had been early March next year to allow for the completion of Chinese New Year festivities in February.

However the students are now again in demand as the Chinese Government prepares for the 2010 Asian Games, to be held in the city of GhangZhou in November: They are required to help train an additional 5000 baristas and chefs for the Games, under a contract between their school and the Chinese Government.

Tim says the students will now arrive in early May. They have already completed two years training in China: At Whanganui UCOL they will study for the Certificate in Hospitality (Professional Cookery) Level 4 during a 38 week programme at the School of Catering and Hospitality.

Tim says staff at the UCOL school are looking forward to their arrival: “We’re delighted and proud that they have chosen Whanganui UCOL to extend their studies in professional cookery. And although they are coming here to learn more, we will also be interested in hearing about their early experiences in China.”

The students will learn in one group, under Whanganui UCOL tutor Gina Wagstaff.
