Graduates Out In Force

Central Auckland will come alive with the colour and celebration of The University of Auckland’s Spring Graduation tomorrow (6 October).

Some 2515 students will receive a total of 2750 qualifications at four ceremonies in the Aotea Centre. There will be 103 doctorates conferred, a record for Spring Graduation.

The Faculty of Business and Economics has the most graduates with 643 followed by Science (609), Arts (568) and Education (341). There are 205 in Medical and Health Sciences, 151 in Engineering, 88 in Law, 129 in Creative Arts and Industries, and 16 in Theology.

At 9.30am graduands, staff and Council members will process through the city down Bowen Avenue and Victoria Street East, and up Queen Street and Mayoral Drive.

Chancellor Roger France will personally confer 1848 degrees and diplomas with the rest (902) bestowed “in absentia” on those not attending.

Speakers at the ceremonies are the Attorney-General, the Hon Chris Finlayson, the Acting Chief Executive of Te Papa Tongarewa, Michelle Hippolite, the Managing Director and CEO of Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Mike Daniell, and the CEO of Fletcher Building Ltd, Jonathan Ling.

This is the second graduation for 2009; in early May there were 11 ceremonies over three days.
