NorthTec hosts international e-learning expert at Northern Regional E-Learning Symposia

More than twenty industry and sector stakeholders attended the Northern Regional e-Learning Symposium yesterday (subs 19 October) at NorthTec’s Interactive Learning Centre on the Raumanga campus in Whangarei.

The symposium is the first of four regional symposia sponsored by AKO Aotearoa to be held around New Zealand and features international keynote speaker from the University of Wollongong, Dr Sue Bennett and New Zealand e-learning expert John Clayton.

Dr Sue Bennett is an Associate Professor - ICT in Education in the University of Wollongong’s Faculty of Education and is Director of the Education IT Centre. She has extensive experience in the design, development and evaluation of multimedia and online instructional materials developed for both university and commercial clients.

Prior to joining the Wollongong University team Sue managed the Interactive Multimedia Unit at Central Queensland University. She has previously held positions at the Australian National University and the University of Canberra.
The Northern Region’s symposium is designed to show organisations how e-learning can provide a cost effective way to meet their training and education needs and priorities.

Dr Bennett said that participants in the symposium were very focused and had come to the event with clear questions to ask of the presenters to help them address the concerns and challenges they face in terms of e-learning.

The symposium provided a rare and valuable opportunity to discuss such issues at a high level in a regional context.

“I used to work in an isolated area in Australia so I really understand the value of such events,” said Dr Bennett.

Participants in yesterday’s symposium included representatives from the Northland District Health Board, Kensington Hospital, Carter Holt Harvey and regional timber mills.

“This symposium presented best practice real-world solutions that organisations can implement,” said Vasi Doncheva, NorthTec’s Flexible Learning Manager. “Participants had the opportunity to use the presentations, workshops and case studies facilitated by internationally-recognised e-learning experts to come away with an action plan for developing e-learning solutions for their business or organisation.”
