Recreation degree students complete their course
Media release: NorthTec’s first Sport and Recreation degree students complete their course
Northland golfer Caroline Bon will be trying to earn her place on the Ladies’ European Tour at a qualifying school in Spain on 14 December but says that she didn’t want to contemplate turning pro without a degree behind her.
Caroline is one of a group of five NorthTec students who have just completed their Bachelor of Sport and Recreation – the first group of NorthTec students to complete the degree which is awarded by AUT.
The third year of the degree is delivered in conjunction with AUT who provide tutors and use NorthTec’s facilities at Kensington Stadium for their teaching.
“I wasn’t going to turn pro and not have anything behind me,” said Caroline. “It’s given me heaps of knowledge about nutrition and fitness.
Meanwhile fellow NorthTec student Kyal Collins will be using his new degree as a means of achieving his ambition of teaching fulltime.
The flexibility of being able to work in Kerikeri and study at night classes in Whangarei has been ideal.
“The learning you get is quite substantial,” said Kyal. “I would definitely recommend it. It’s been fantastic to have quality teachers up here in Northland and to have the degree programme facilitated by AUT in the final year.”
Kyal is now planning on doing his teaching diploma.
