Northtec Boat Building Graduate Establishes International Career

NorthTec boatbuilding graduate Feng Wei has gone on to establish as international career in the sector since completing a short course in Composite Boatbuilding in Whangarei in 2004.

“Although I was the only Chinese student there I had great time with my NorthTec tutors who have a great deal of experience in boatbuilding and teaching,” said Mr Wei. “I learned a lot from them. The quality of the course and the learning facility itself was impressive. The people were warm and hospitable and the environment was wonderful. I enjoyed it very much.”

Having left NorthTec he worked as a Project Manager for a British-owned boatyard before working as Technical Manager for a Norwegian-owned boatyard.

He then work as Production Manager in Shanghai, China before starting his current role as Deputy General Manager in charge of factory operation for newly-established production yacht building company Millennium Marine near Jinhua, in Zhejiang Province, China.

“With the help of the knowledge and experience I gained at Northtec I have worked really hard and have made great progress in my career.”

Mr Wei says that he now intends to send his employees to NorthTec for both the composite boatbuilding and marine cabinetmaking courses offered at Future Trades in Whangarei.

“I think it is time now to introduce other people to these excellent courses and to help them with their new careers.”

NorthTec is the Tai Tokerau (Northland) region's largest provider of tertiary education, with campuses and learning centres in Whangarei, Kerikeri, Rāwene, Dargaville, Kaikohe and Kaitaia. NorthTec also has over 60 community-based delivery points from Coatesville in rural Rodney to Ngataki in the Far North.
