Pathway to arts degree at Hungry Creek

NorthTec offers pathway to arts degree at Hungry Creek
NorthTec is offering its Certificate in Applied Arts at Hungry Creek Art and Craft School in the Rodney district for the first time this year – a move that could lead to students at the art school being able to complete their Bachelor of Applied Arts at Hungry Creek next year.
NorthTec has had a strong connection with Hungry Creek over many years. The current Director of Studies, Ruth Tait, was a student at the then Northland Polytechnic. NorthTec graduates have also been employed at Hungry Creek as tutors. These include David Pullen (jewellery) and Mark Brockie (ceramics).
Hungry Creek founder and current Head of School Andrew Venter helped set up the jewellery course at NorthTec. NorthTec tutor Murray Gibbs previously taught at Hungry Creek and is now its external moderator.
The certificate course will start at Hungry Creek on 15 February (subject to attracting sufficient enrolments) and will be delivered by Hungry Creek’s tutors. Much of the course content will be the same as that offered at NorthTec campuses with the exception of jewellery. This is a specific area of focus at Hungry Creek and will only be offered at that location.
Hungry Creek’s Ruth Tait said that she is delighted that the certificate will be taught at Hungry Creek this year and is excited by the future plans that are in the offing as a result of the relationship between NorthTec and Hungry Creek.
“We are currently in discussions with NorthTec with the aim of offering the third and final year of the Bachelor of Applied Art programme at Hungry Creek next year. Hungry Creek students would receive recognition of their prior learning for levels 5 and 6. This would allow them to complete their degree at Hungry Creek. As far as we know this would be the first degree to be delivered in Rodney.”
Papers being delivered as part of the NorthTec Certificate in Applied Arts at Hungry Creek this year are as follows:
Semester 1:
‘Thinking
about art’, ‘Sculpture – exploring materials’,
Ceramics, Drawing and design 1
Semester 2:
