Literary talent sought by renowned writers
A new chapter is set to unfold at Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) as the institute launches a unique Creative Writing programme, tailored to develop untapped South Auckland literary talent.
The programme is designed to appeal to budding writers, with specific courses designed to reflect the experiences of students. One such course is ‘Writing South Auckland’.
“MIT is committed to providing education that serves the needs of the community and we are delighted to be able to provide the opportunity for people to realise their creative potential,” says Dr Peter Brothers.
Students of the programme will have the opportunity to practice their craft under the tutelage of renowned writers; Witi Ihimaera, Albert Wendt and Robert Sullivan, all of whom bring a wealth of expertise and writing acclaim.
“There is a cultural vitality within the Counties Manukau region, which often manifests itself in the music and entertainment industries,” says Ken Larsen, developer and lecturer of the programme. “ The written word is another way for people to express themselves. We ran a taster course before Christmas and I was delighted to see an abundance of raw talent.”
The writing course is just the first of a series of creative arts initiatives to be rolled out over the next few years at MIT to advance undiscovered creative talent in South Auckland.
