Andy Halewood’s 7th Day

Andy Halewood’s 7th Day

UCOL furniture designer Andy Halewood has been selected to take part in an elite national design exhibition on Waiheke Island, for the second year in a row.

Andy is one of only 10 designers selected to take part in Design Make: Sun-Lounger 2010, an annual event which showcases excellence in furniture design: This year it features sun-loungers designed by furniture makers around New Zealand.

His work was also selected for 2008 year’s exhibition, organised by the Waiheke Community Art Gallery, which featured the best sideboard designs.

Andy has titled his sun-lounger design, 7th Day. It combines a slatted tambour, or timber mat, made of eucalyptus wood with a bean bag with beans that move around in a liner to conform to the shape of a body.

He says 7th day is not just for sun lovers: “In an age of concern about skin cancers, it can be used indoors as well as out, reading a favorite book or sipping on a can of Guinness.”

Or, he says, the tambour can be rolled up and taken to the beach. “Throw in a shovel to make a shape in the sand and the tambour sits on top, as the perfect seat or lounger. When you get back from a swim, you can sit or lie down without getting covered in sand.”

Andy is traveling to Waiheke Island this weekend for exhibition opening and the judging of a $2000 award. Judging this year will be by the Design Team of Skagerat, Denmark.

Andy is a senior lecturer for UCOL’s Diploma in Furniture Design and Making, a qualification that is unique to UCOL in New Zealand.
