NorthTec will be running evening classes in documentary filmmaking at its Rāwene campus building on the success of its Flaxroots documentary filmmaking summer school last month.

“We were thrilled with the response to the summer school,” said tutor Lavinia Kingi. “So many people wanted to participate that we were able to hold a second 5-day course.”

Summer school participant Jacquie Brooks saw the course as a great way of meeting other filmmakers in the Hokianga and learning more about Maori tikanga. She has a strong interest in making ethnographic and environmental films. “It’s been really good in terms of teaching us about ethics and tikanga. When you’re a filmmaker there’s always something new to learn and this course is very reasonably priced.”

Musician and fellow summer school filmmaker Mahina-Ina Kaui was full of praise for the course. “They really extended my thinking. The tutors complement each other very well.”

Summer school tutor Murray Nathan will be running the upcoming evening classes with Jessie McVeagh starting on Monday, 1 March and running on consecutive Monday nights from 4:30pm to 7:30pm for 10 weeks.

“There is a lot of interest in filmmaking,” said Murray. “Many people want to archive their kaumatua and kuia who are leaving us so that they can leave messages for future generations or so that the family can capture the nuances of the person and how they talk.”

Demand for places on the night class has been high. “The response has been incredible and it looks like we may be having a second night class running at the same time but on a different day.”

If you are interested in taking part in the evening classes call Murray Nathan or Jessie McVeagh on 09 405 7659 for more information.
