Weltec, University of Auckland On Addictions

Bridging the Gap - Weltec And the University of Auckland in Agreement on Addictions

A shared goal to provide more options for students has sparked a new partnership between the University of Auckland and Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec). Both leaders in the provision of Addictions training, the tertiary providers have recently agreed on a new pathway for students to progress from degree level to a Masters in Health Sciences.

The initiative was instigated by a mutual desire to provide further study options in addiction studies to students. WelTec students who have completed a degree or graduate diploma in addictions will now have the opportunity to enter directly on to the post graduate programme at the University of Auckland.
The agreement also provides benefits for the University’s undergraduates. Those students who do not meet the entry criteria to enrol at post graduate level will be referred on to complete New Zealand’s only Bachelor in Alcohol and Drug Studies at WelTec before entering the university’s post graduate programme.

Julia Hennessy, Executive Dean at WelTec states the agreement is significant both for future students and the wider addictions workforce. “The sector has recognised the need for a general up-skilling of the addictions workforce. This makes access to education and training in addictions of huge importance to those working in the field of addictions.”

University of Auckland Head of School of Population Health, Professor Alistair Woodward agrees that the new pathway will provide benefits for the addictions workforce, “WelTec and the University have complementary strengths in resources, research and teaching. The agreement will open up new pathways for students and will increase support for those entering the workforce.”
