WelTec scholarship recipients celebrate success

On February 18, Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) held its annual scholarship ceremony. 28 scholarships were awarded including Hutt City Council Centennial Scholarships. For the first time, nine Bachelor of Engineering Technology scholarships were also presented to celebrate the launch of the new degree programme in 2010.

In his address to the scholarship recipients WelTec Chairperson, Peter Preston commented, “WelTec is in the business of developing new professionals for the future. This scholarship ceremony is an opportunity to celebrate the achievement of our students. The calibre of our scholarship students has been particularly high in 2010. All our scholarship winners have shown both commitment and passion which will go a long way in their future careers.”

Hutt local, Hamish Murphy was among one of the nine Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BEngTech) scholarships recipients. The highly-anticipated BEngTech is offered in collaboration with five other large metropolitan education providers including CPIT, Wintec, MIT, Unitec and Otago Polytechnic.

The new programme offered at WelTec has allowed Hamish to study closer to home with his preferred major of Mechanical Engineering. “The practical aspect of the programme was the major draw card. It balances theory with hands-on learning and it offers all the papers I wanted. I’ve chosen mechanical engineering because I like being able to see what I’ve made - but there’s more to it than just picking up some tools and material and going for it. There’s a huge amount of planning, math and strategy involved in looking at a project in its entirety and I think that’s why engineering appealed to me.”

WelTec CEO Dr Linda Sissons says the Bachelor of Engineering Technology is a result of the collaboration between industry and tertiary education providers to establish a nationally-standardised, degree programme that will ensure the future sustainability of New Zealand’s engineering industry.
