Ministry of Education reviewing support to sector

Ministry of Education reviewing support to sector

The Ministry of Education has launched an organisational change programme focussed on lifting student achievement and improving the quality of its services, within existing departmental baselines.

“Last year the Ministry looked at how we could make savings at a time of economic constraint. In order to create the education system we need for the future, we must be effective now to ensure our activities have the greatest impact on student achievement. This may mean scaling down some activities, and working in new ways on others,” said Karen Sewell, Secretary for Education.

The new programme will focus on three critical work areas –lifting Student Achievement, Infrastructure and Services to the Sector, and Improving Efficiency. This may have an impact on Ministry staffing levels but the level and scope of this is not yet known.

“Our key priorities include aligning the way we organise ourselves as a Ministry to work with providers to lift performance, confirming the services we need to provide to support the sector's performance at a high standard, and identifying the savings we need to make for our resources to be used more effectively.”

The programme of work will focus on what makes the greatest difference for learners, cover all Ministry activities and groups, and be sequenced to make it manageable.
