Eco Hut Challenge For Future Architects & Builders

Eco Hut Challenge For Future Architects And Builders

Students from more than a dozen Bay of Plenty schools will compete against each other on the Rotorua lake front on Wednesday 24 March 2010, building ecologically friendly huts as part of the Enviroschools Eco Hut Challenge.

Using recyclable and reusable materials- with anything from cardboard, bamboo to curtains- the students will be designing and building an environmentally friendly building complete with eco-friendly ideas on water use, insulation and heating. In addition to building, students will also help judge the ultimate winner.

Environment Bay of Plenty Education Officer Sally-Anne Daniell said “Ecological building principles, like using recycled materials, north-oriented buildings and insulation can be easily incorporated into new building designs and can create warmer, healthier homes with less environmental impacts.”

It is hoped that the Eco Hut Challenge inspires these students and their communities to build more ecologically friendly buildings in the future, Ms Daniell said.

“Some of these principles can also be used in existing homes. Hanging thermal backed curtains or wrapping your hot water heater are easy ways to prevent heat loss and in your home saving you money and helping the environment.”

The Eco Hut Challenge is part of the diverse Enviroschools programme supported by Environment Bay of Plenty which encourages students to instinctively think and act sustainably.

The Eco Hut Challenge begins at 10am with judging from 1:30pm to 2pm.
