Worldskills comes to UCOL
UCOL is hosting the Regional Engineering WorldSkills competition in Palmerston North this Friday.
The regional competition for engineering apprentices is part of the build up to the National WorldSkills competition in September and the International WorldSkills in London next year.
The
entrants in Friday’s day-long competition will come from
all parts of the Central Districts; as far North as New
Plymouth.
A total of 19 participants will take part in
the eight-hour heats in their specific disciplines in
welding, fitting machining, and fabrication.
UCOL lecturers Peter Whitburn, Peter Govaerts, Andre Hofman and Stu Coxon will act as judges and will be joined by Brian Davies and Alex Williams.
Jared Lamb, Elliot Wilkes and Ross Anderson, all of whom have competed at the International Worldskills competition, will also help judge the regional event.
The successful apprentices, who fulfill the criteria, will be invited to compete at the nationals in Christchurch in September, to compete for a place at the internationals in London next year.
The WorldSkills competition involves more than 50 countries and takes place every two years. It covers around 50 industry disciplines as diverse as carpentry, fashion and engineering.
