Fast forward filming
UCOL BAVI students withstood 48 hours of Frantic Film-making when they took part in the iconic annual event recently.
It is
the fifth year that UCOL teams have taken part in New
Zealand’s largest film making contest but this is the
first time it has been integrated as part of their course
assessment.
The group of second year students (48 Hours
of Love) produced a musical, Memoirs of a Fabricator as
their entry. The year three students’(6 make 3
productions) femme fatale style entry was titled Show us ya
gifts.
UCOL Video lecturer Mel Edmon says the contest is a great way for students to learn by doing. “They have to plan well and work together to meet a very tight deadline.”
All teams are assigned a movie genre at 7.00
pm on the Friday night. They must then write their script,
produce storyboards, arrange locations, costumes and props
before their shoot begins on the Saturday
morning.
Editing and post production takes place as the
film is still being shot. All entries must be submitted by
the 7.00 pm Sunday deadline.
“The students get to work on so many levels,” says Mel. “They have to choose their production roles very carefully and work to their strengths.”
In addition to entering the competition, the
third year students were required to arrange a public
screening of their and other local films, as part of their
assessment.
Neither UCOL film entry was placed in the
‘city finals’ but Mel says the students have learnt a
huge amount from the experience. “It’s like a microcosm
of the film industry, jammed into one weekend.”
