2010 WPSSA Intermediate Winter Sports Day

Media release: Sun comes out for 2010 WPSSA Intermediate Winter Sports Day

More than 1500 children from 18 schools around the Whangarei district took part in a very successful 2010 WPSSA Intermediate Winter Sports Day today at Kensington Sports Park (including the ASB Leisure Centre), the Kensington Netball Centre and Northland Hockey Stadium.

14 second year students on NorthTec’s Diploma in Sport and Recreation organised the event with 30 first year students from the diploma providing volunteer support on the day. The event was also supported by the Northland Rugby Union, Kamo High School and Whangarei Girls High School – all of whom provided referees for the event.

The organisers were pleased with the weather on the day and were happy that there had been only a moderate number of injuries despite the wet conditions underfoot.

The aim of the event is to provide a fun opportunity for year 7 and 8 students to learn about, and participate in, sport. Students participated in 20-minute long games across seven sports; basketball, rugby, rugby league, rippa rugby, netball, hockey and soccer. There are no official results for the day with students participating just for fun.

NorthTec Sport and Recreation tutor Bobby Newport said that he was pleased with the way that the event had gone. “We’re really happy with the way that the day came together and would like to thank everyone for the support that they have given us.”

NorthTec is the Tai Tokerau (Northland) region's largest provider of tertiary education, with campuses and learning centres in Whangarei, Kerikeri, Rāwene, Dargaville, Kaikohe and Kaitaia. NorthTec also has over 60 community-based delivery points from Coatesville in rural Rodney to Ngataki in the Far North.
