‘Where’s The Plan? – Online Video Asks
A new animated video
clip has been added to PPTA’s Dimming.co.nz website.
The interactive site was launched earlier this year,
highlighting the savage 80% cut to night class funding.
It was part of an ongoing campaign to draw attention to
policy directions that were “less than enlightened,”
PPTA president Kate Gainsford said.
The second video
clip focuses on the lack of any overarching plan or strategy
to deal with the complex issues facing secondary education
in New Zealand.
Gainsford said the Dimming website was a
way of opening up discussion.
“We are always looking
for ways to encourage robust debate around issues that are
critical to secondary education and the internet has proved
to be an excellent way to do this,” she said.
The
second video was born out of concern about the
government’s piecemeal approach to education.
“Trade
academies will only help a few, youth guarantees and public
private partnerships offer little for secondary school
students and schools. They do not amount to a plan; they are
just bits and pieces.
“There have been some good ideas, but there is no sense of urgency or forward momentum or even certainty about direction,” she said.
Gainsford said
the initial Dimming video received a lot of support and
positive feedback while encouraging debate.
Members of
the public are able to contribute to critical thinking about
the issues by leaving comments on the site’s discussion
board and a Dimming Facebook page also includes a platform
for people’s views.
“It’s a light hearted way of
presenting some weighty issues,” she said.
