InternetNZ's funding for Computer Clubhouse
InternetNZ announces funding for Computer Clubhouse New Zealand
InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc) is pleased to announce that it has granted $42,000 in funding to Computer Clubhouse New Zealand.
The Computer Clubhouse initiative exposes adolescents from underserved communities across New Zealand to computing and Internet technologies. Youth make use of state-of-the-art technology and work with adult mentors to develop vocational skills and build self-confidence.
InternetNZ Chief Executive Vikram Kumar says the work of the Clubhouse is squarely aligned with InternetNZs objective to promote access to the Internet widely.
Technology and the Internet have now become an inextricable part of most peoples daily lives and the work of the Computer Clubhouse in enhancing digital literacy benefits the entire community.
InternetNZs funding will assist Computer Clubhouse New Zealands coordinating body the Network of Aotearoa Clubhouses (NOAC) to build its capacity and support the work of regional Clubhouses in Auckland, Hamilton, Whanganui, Whakatane and Wellington.
Whilst the Computer Clubhouse has several other funding sources and sponsors, our funding will be operating expenditure to help cover NOACs administrative overheads, says Kumar.
NGOs play a critical role in filling gaps left over by Government and private sector initiatives. Even if they obtain capital funding or project-based funding in an increasingly tough economy, their operations are often handicapped by a lack of operational funding.
We see Computer Clubhouse as an example where a comparatively small amount of operational funding can help NGOs better access and utilise a much larger amount of capital or project-based funding. As such our efforts are very complementary to those by the Government and the private sector.
Computer Clubhouse New Zealand is an important community-based initiative, says Kumar. We are delighted with this new partnership. The Clubhouse has a strong and proven track record in helping to enhance technological fluency and narrow New Zealands digital divide - objectives that InternetNZ fully supports.
