High School Students Feature In UCOL Photography Event
Six Wanganui High School students are now award winning artists, after the Alternatives 2010 prize giving ceremony.
The biennial Alternatives exhibition is staged by photography students in the Quay School of Art BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) degree. The exhibition prospectus was circulated on the internet and on Facebook and the UCOL students selected photographic artworks from Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Whanganui, including work by local high school students.
The winners in the High School
Division, judged by the school’s Head of Photography Rita
Dibert, were announced at last week’s prize giving. The
winners were: Highly commended Emma Fawcet, Alice Rison and
Alice Joblin-Mills, third Place Grace Brown, second place
Josh Kirk with Connor Cameron in first place. Students are
from Wanganui High School and Cullinane College.
The prizes to Quay School of Art students were selected by photographer Leigh Mitchell-Anyon, Wanganui High teacher Catherine Slayer and Wanganui High School Art Department Head Graham Hall.
The prizes were awarded to: Aaron Gash ( River City Framers Prize), Su Hendeles (House of Art and Framing Prize), Bonnie Wroe (Quay School Prize), Alex Bird, (Quay School Prize), Iva Leonard (Warehouse Stationary Prize), Billie Bedford, Simonne Baillie and Hannah Leahy (Sienna Art Shoppe Prizes). The Wellington Photographic Award went to Massey University student, Em Davidson.
Special guests at the prize giving included well known New Zealand photographer, Ans Westra as well as many Whanganui high school students and their parents.
All prize winning photographic work, along with over 200 photographs from international and New Zealand photographers, is on view at the Federal Hotel Gallery each day except Sunday until 31 July, from 11am to 1pm.
