PPTA offers support for Canterbury colleagues

PPTA president Kate Gainsford has pledged the association’s support for colleagues affected by Saturday’s quake in Canterbury.

“There has been an outpouring of concern from teachers around the country and we are very focussed on supporting our Canterbury colleagues,” she said.

PPTA was ready to put resources into helping affected members if they needed it, she said.

Gainsford also urged teachers in quake affected areas to be cautious and stay away from schools until the all clear was given.

“We know that teachers and principals will have a natural tendency to want to get in there and clean up as soon as possible, but in this situation they must hold back and listen to the instructions of the national authorities.”

The quake was also a timely reminder for all schools to have a crisis management plan in a state of readiness, she said.
