Industrial action to be discussed at PPTA meeting

Industrial action to be discussed at PPTA annual conference

PPTA members will be updated with plans for further industrial action at next week’s annual conference, PPTA president Kate Gainsford says.

Actions planned for term 4 include rostering home students, a ban on call-back days (when the school is closed for instruction to students but teachers are expected to be at school – ie weekends, school holidays, and teacher only days) and a ban on attending meetings and events after 5pm.

Gainsford said industrial action was not something members took lightly, but that they felt it was the only option when faced with the government’s refusal to address teachers’ concerns.

“Issues such as class size, duty on and off school grounds and health and safety are being ignored – despite the fact that many of the claims surrounding these issues are low or no cost,” she said.

Other issues to be addressed at conference include, disruptive behaviour, the role of the New Zealand Teachers’ Council and public-private partnerships. The papers based on these issues will be voted on and will shape PPTA policy for the coming year.

For those unable to attend, the conference will be web-streamed live from the PPTA website. Clips of key speeches, debates and decisions will also be available to be replayed. Full conference papers can be found at http://www.ppta.org.nz/index.php/annual-conference/annconf-papers10 and the conference programme can be found at http://www.ppta.org.nz/index.php/annual-conference
