Beca Announces Winners of 2010 Engineering Scholarships

Nine promising young engineering students have received a significant financial boost, winning Beca’s prestigious engineering scholarships - with a combined value of $30,000.

A panel of judges comprising both Beca directors and staff from the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Engineering selected the winners based on a combination of academic ability, impact on the community and potential to contribute to the engineering profession in the future.

David Carter, Beca’s executive director, says: “We’re always impressed with the calibre of engineering students coming through the University of Auckland and this year is no exception.

“It’s great to be able to recognise these high achievers and encourage them to continue on the engineering path.”

The coveted Beca Rotary Club of Auckland Scholarship ($5,500), which is awarded to the most outstanding all-round fourth-year engineering student, went to civil engineering specialist, Pia Abercromby.

The former St Cuthbert’s College student has received multiple accolades while completing her degree and has been on the Dean’s Honours list for the past three years, as well as receiving a Beca Scholarship in her first year.

A further three final-year students and five first-year students were also acknowledged for a combination of academic achievement and contribution to their community.

Fourth year students Sheena Garg (Chemical & Materials), Ivan Ravlich (Chemical & Materials) and Matthew Lawrence (Mechanical) were presented with $3000 Beca Engineering Scholarships.

First year students Simon Mekhail, Alistair Collins, Sue Huang, Qi-Wern Li and Charlotte Davis were recognised for their academic performance, communication skills, personality and the drive to make a difference to the profession, all winning $2000 Beca Engineering in Society Scholarships.

Beca, one of New Zealand’s leading technical consultancies, has been recognising young aspiring engineers since 1990 through scholarships with Auckland, Canterbury and recently Waikato universities.
