PPTA rejects government offer – resumes industrial action
PPTA’s national executive has unanimously rejected a government offer which shows a disturbing indication of the level of value the government attaches to teaching and learning in secondary schools.
President Kate Gainsford said, over three days of negotiating, PPTA received an offer that in fact equated to a smaller increase in salary rates than the government’s initial offer in June.
There has been no substantial shift between this offer and the last one received by PPTA, which was rejected by members at an overwhelming 99%.
An offer of 0% and a $1000 (before tax) one-off payment for the first year and 1.8% for the second year was increased slightly to 0.5%, the $1000 and 1.9%.
A clawback in teacher conditions was still on the table with a previous offer of preparation time for part-time teachers now taken away.
PPTA executive felt this did not go far enough towards meeting the claims of the members, Gainsford said.
The government’s offer had fallen flat with executive and as a result industrial action planned for this week will go ahead, with year 9 students being rostered off.
The year 11 rostering home that was suspended last Thursday will also now go ahead this Thursday (October 21).
PPTA has sent official notice to this effect to the Secretary of Education and Boards of Trustees.
