Ministry’s wage statements confuse teachers, parents, public

The Ministry of Education’s last minute statements about not docking teacher pay for this week’s strikes have caused some confusion among PPTA members, parents and the general public.

PPTA president Kate Gainsford said members were fully expecting to have their wages docked during this week’s industrial action.

Gainsford said official strike notices had been issued to schools on September 21 for action in term 4, and again on October 18 for the reinstatement of the year 11 action.

“PPTA has been straight up about this, teachers have taken part in this action fully cognizant that they were on strike and wages would be deducted.

“We know what a strike means,” she said.

It was the Secretary for Education’s call not to deduct wages for this week and the decision was made only this morning.

Action would continue as planned, Gainsford said.
