Visions Restaurant played host to CPIT’s inaugural 2010 Tertiary Taster Scholarship evening this week, at which 39 Year 11 secondary school students were awarded scholarships towards the development of their tertiary education.
The Tertiary Tasters Scholarship Programme is now in its fourth year. The Programme is run at CPIT campuses, working in close partnership with the four specific schools, Hornby, Hillmorton, Aranui and Mairehau. Next year will see another 100 students gain the opportunity to “Taste” various subjects in depth, and have real experiences to draw on for their future career choices.
The schools involved elected 25 students each to participate in CPIT’s Tertiary Taster Scholarship Programme held during the year. Approximately 100 students participated in the Taster courses and continuing attendance was exceptionally high according to CPIT’s Tertiary Taster Coordinator, Diane Ryan.
Pupils took part in various trades and vocational courses from Art & Design and Food & Hospitality through to Carpentry and Automotive.
“During the Taster courses the students have real hands-on experience in the areas and they get a real taste of what is on offer for them at CPIT,” says Ryan.
At the end of the taster courses students were then encouraged to apply for a scholarship at CPIT and 39 scholarships were awarded to students from the four secondary schools.
Last night’s winning students now have the opportunity to ‘bank’ their scholarships for 15 months, while they continue to attend school, or they can choose to start CPIT mid-year in 2010.
