UCOL Photography student snares Woolf grant

Whanganui UCOL Bachelor of Fine Arts student Simonne Baillie, has been named as a recipient of a Ronald Woolf Memorial Trust grant, to be used towards her photographic study.

Next year Simonne will be entering Year 3 of the BFA, majoring in photography. She admits she struggled to choose her major as she also has strong interest in painting printmaking.

The Whanganui born 22 year old won the $500 grant with an extensive portfolio of “alternative portraiture” images. “I like to mix traditional darkroom techniques with digital imaging,” she says. “My work combines the old with the new.”
Simonne has always had a passion for the visual arts and hopes her future includes teaching art as a vocation.

The Quay School of the Arts Photography Department received a substantial grant to support the Alternatives International Photographic Exhibition three years ago. BFA student Jes-Ci Singh Nigra also received a grant for her fourth year of study at the Quay School in 2007.

The Ronald Woolf Memorial Trust, Wellington, was established in 1988 in recognition of the contribution to photography by the late Ronald Woolf.

Trust Grants are awarded to young photographers (under the age of 30) to further their education in the study of photography.

Applicants are required to demonstrate artistic promise combined with technical aptitude and serious intent, and an enthusiasm to explore their creative talents through the medium of photography.
