Icon status for Teacher Excellence Leader

UCOL’s Leader of Teaching Excellence Janet Walke has been appointed as an Icon, UCOL’s highest academic honour.

Her appointment as one of two new UCOL Icons brings the total number of UCOL academic staff with Icon status to 11.

Icon appointments are made to academic staff members who have achieved sustained distinction and excellence in their fields of expertise.

Eleven staff members have also been promoted to the level of Expert, having shown significant national / international recognition within their industry or profession.

Deputy Chief Executive Bonnie Dewart says Icons and Experts exemplify the high quality of teaching at UCOL and the value placed on community and industry recognition. “These excellent academics are role models and mentors for other academic staff, and an inspiration to our students.”

Janet Walke is based at Palmerston North campus but her role spans all three UCOL campuses.

She takes the lead role in the provision of the Certificate in Adult Teaching (Advanced) programme and provides new lecturing staff with training and mentoring support. She heads the eLearning team at UCOL.

Janet joined UCOL in 2005 as Programme Leader for Culture and Community in the National Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care. She has taught for 30 years across the education sector, including extensive experience in Early Childhood and Adult Education Teaching for Parents Centre New Zealand.

She convenes the Ako Aotearoa Central Hub team and was convenor for the 2009 and 2010 National Teaching and Learning Conferences, held at UCOL.
