Secondary principals’ settlement good news for
schools
The new career structure in the
Secondary Principals’ Collective Agreement is good for
secondary principals and for schools, Secretary for
Education Karen Sewell said today.
“School leadership is vital to achieving successful education outcomes for all young people in our secondary schools,” said Karen Sewell.
“The new career structure in the Secondary Principals’ Collective Agreement recognises that professional knowledge, development, and leadership are essential qualities to encourage and reward in our secondary principals.”
The new collective has a term of just over two years, expiring on 29 March 2013. It removes the experience payment for secondary principals, which was based on length of service alone.
A new career structure has been introduced, with a three-stage allowance system and criteria such as professional development and educational leadership.
“This was a constructive bargaining process that has resulted in a very good collective agreement,” said Karen Sewell.
“Many thanks to the advocates from the Ministry, the Post Primary Teachers’ Association, and the Secondary Principals’ Association, and to union members who ratified the agreement.”
