Ministry of Education pleased that bargaining starts

The Ministry of Education is pleased to start bargaining today for the Support Staff in Schools’ Collective Agreement (SSCA).

“We’re looking forward to a constructive round of negotiations with the New Zealand Educational Institute and the Service and Food Workers Union on support staff pay and conditions,” said Group Manager Education Workforce Fiona McTavish.

“Support staff make up almost a third of the schooling workforce and have an annual payroll of just under $400 million. They’re a diverse group, with roles ranging from Executive Officer to IT Manager to Teacher Aide to Librarian, and many more,” said Fiona McTavish.

“All support staff are a vital part of schools’ work to lift educational achievement,” said Fiona McTavish.

Fiona McTavish said she was unable to comment on the recent NZEI report on support staff.

“We haven’t seen the report yet, and in any case we wouldn’t want to be debating issues through the media. We’re pleased that negotiations are underway, and hope to work towards settlement,” said Fiona McTavish.
