Hui explores kaupapa Māori research
Thursday 5 May 2011
A hui being held at Wellington’s Pipitea marae today and tomorrow, 5-6 May, is exploring the challenges of kaupapa Māori research.
The hui is hosted by Te Wāhanga, which is the Māori research unit within the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER).
It has drawn together an audience of around 200 Māori researchers, policy makers, decision makers and community leaders in fields of education, health, social sciences and the environment. The hui is supported by Ako Aotearaoa.
Speakers include Linda Smith, Wally Penetito, Moana Jackson, Percy Tipene, Ani Mikaere and Kathie Irwin.
The manager of Te Wāhanga, Jessica Hutchings, said the hui signalled NZCER’s commitment to quality kaupapa Māori research.
“We need robust evidence to inform and support decision-making to further the aspirations of Māori communities. There has been a rapid growth in the capability and capacity of kaupapa Māori research in the past decade and this hui wants to make a contribution to building that capacity.”
A book published by NZCER Press, Kia Tangi Te Tītī Permission to Speak is being launched at the hui on Thursday evening. It is a collection of writing about successful Māori schooling, edited by Paul Whitinui.
