Institute To Help With Training For Christchurch Restoration

Friday 13 May, 2011

Manukau Institute Of Technology To Assist With Training For Christchurch Restoration.

Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) has confirmed the addition of four certificate programme intakes in May, in order to immediately assist with the future demand of trained people to help with the restoration of Christchurch and to meet local demand.

The Faculty of Engineering and Trades will offer MIT Certificate in Electrical Engineering (Level 2), National Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Level 2) and MIT Certificate Entry to Carpentry from Monday 23 May with Certificate in Horticulture (Level 2) starting Wednesday 25 May.

MIT Director of Academic Operations Peter Quigg acknowledges trade skills are in short supply and hopes this Institute initiative will offer support needed to the government and industry.

Peter Quigg says, “The programmes will provide skills that will enable them to be valuable to members of the workforce and are the basis for future upskilling and lifelong employment.

Budget 2011 will provide up to $42 million for trades training for the Canterbury region to pre-empt the demand of tradespeople expected in two to four years.

Certificate programmes introduce students to the skills and knowledge that can lead to employment, apprenticeships or act as a gateway to further studies. Manukau Institute of Technology is one of the largest and most experienced providers of trade training in New Zealand.
