Student’s photo assignment for Museum provides experience
Student’s first photo assignment for Museum provides experience and adds to their Portfolio
Photographing events at the Matariki Celebrations on Saturday, June 11 enabled three students in the third year of NorthTec’s Bachelor of Applied Arts degree (Visual Arts) to gain valuable insights into the profession.
The results of the efforts of students Hayley Murray, Luke Murray and Jordan Reihana are a collection of memorable photographs documenting the events at the Matariki celebrations.
The photographs left such an impression on Kiwi North Whangarei Museum Kiwihouse and Heritage Park Director, Joanna Cobley, that they will be used to put together a storyboard to promote next year’s celebrations at the museum.
Ms Cobley explained that Kiwi North Whangarei Museum was revitalising a Memorandum of Understanding it has with NorthTec to provide means for NorthTec students to continue working with the museum. “We feel this is a place really good for fostering and nurturing students and certainly those at a tertiary level”, she said, noting that this was the first time NorthTec students had been invited to photograph at the museum in Maunu.
This event offered the students an opportunity to gain a level of understanding about photography that can only be acquired through experimenting with different subjects in a range of situations said NorthTec photography tutor, Ellie Smith.
She also mentioned these same students, and others on the degree, have also been involved with photographing events at both the Ngāpuhi and Ngati Hine Festivals, and at, the international artist’s workshop out at the Whangarei Heads, CollaboratioNZ.
Beginning in Semester Two, NorthTec will be offering for the first time a Certificate in Photography at its Raumanga campus in Whangarei. The six-month course, which can be studied part-time or full-time, gives students the skills to follow a range of career options in photography.
