Student Scholarship Dollars Up for Grabs!
Grab an application form today if you are planning a career in agriculture. Entries for Whangarei A&P Society’s Agricultural Scholarship are now open and application process for the $7,500 Scholarship is very straightforward.
Available for any student living within the boundaries of the Whangarei District Council region, as well as any financial members of Auckland, Helensville and Clevedon A & P Associations, applicants write a half page introduction on themselves, along with a short essay on the topic “Why I have Chosen Agriculture as a Career”.
Following an interview, the successful candidate receives a payment of $2,500.00 each year for three years, with the first payment made when they are accepted by the agricultural institution of their choice.
Ben Aiken of Whangarei, recently completed his three year scholarship and said it was a “tremendous help” enabling him to reduce his student loan and focus on his studies. Currently in his fourth year of study at Waikato University, he advised the Scholarship was hugely beneficial.
“With the scholarship and some summer holiday work, I could apply myself to study without the worry of finances. This allowed me to achieve an A grade average in my papers,” Mr Aiken said.
“Fees, text books and living costs are ongoing expenses and I can’t thank the Whangarei A&P Society enough for this assistance,” he said.
Application forms are available by telephoning the Whangarei Agricultural & Pastoral Society on (09) 438 3109, calling at their office at 127 Bank Street, Whangarei or can be downloaded from www.summershow.co.nz .
President of the Society, Mr Grant Billington, advised that as part of the Society’s commitment to promoting, supporting and motivating the rural sector, it recognized that financial considerations often stopped keen, motivated candidates entering the agricultural sector.
“The agricultural industry offers a huge range of career paths. You don’t have to have grown up on a farm to take advantage of that. Anyone with the right commitment and passion - whether it be in traditional farming fields or in some of the newer industries such as wine growing or making, horticulture or in the veterinary field – should have the opportunity to participate,” Mr Billington said.
“The Society’s agricultural scholarship has already assisted a number of young people to achieve their dreams, and we are keen to help more.”
Applications close on 30 September
