End in sight for Christchurch site-sharing schools
End in sight for Christchurch site-sharing schools
11 July, 2011
PPTA senior vice president Kate Gainsford welcomed the education minister’s move to bring an end to site sharing and congratulated secondary schools for their determination to return to some form of educational normality.
The minister confirmed Avonside Girls’ High and Shirley Boys’ High would temporarily return to their home sites for up to two years.
“Schools will now have an end goal in site – it gives some certainty as the school holidays arrive. The PPTA looks forward to a similar result for the remaining two site-sharing schools in Christchurch,” she said.
“Site-sharing has been unsatisfactory for schools and a return will be challenging but a step toward normality.”
“We admire teachers who’ve shown great commitment to their students and who’ve come through a very tough time.”
PPTA senior vice president Kate Gainsford said the ministry of education would need to ensure secondary school buildings are not only safe but fit for purpose.
Kate Gainsford said the PPTA continued to work through its earthquake taskforce group in Christchurch to support teachers.
“We’re working with our members in Christchurch to make sure they’re getting the right support and working conditions to properly teach secondary students”.
