Summer up-skill for staff of local businesses

Tailored courses to train team leaders and managers in the lead up to the Southern Lakes busy summer season are on offer now at Otago Polytechnic’s Queenstown and Cromwell campuses.

The courses are designed specifically for supervisors and managers in the workplace and incorporate work based learning.

Otago Polytechnic Regional Manager Jean Tilleyshort says individual projects that can improve workplace efficiency and bottom lines while improving the management skills of key staff make sense for tourism and other businesses.

“We’ve worked with industry leaders to develop personalized courses that are useful to businesses in Queenstown and further afield. The courses are designed to deliver both value to the business and skills/qualifications to the staff participants. It’s a win/win model that means the investment by business will be reflected in bottom line improvements while staff become better trained and more efficient.

“The courses are relevant for most businesses. For very small businesses we group similar requirements together and develop projects that will benefit all involved,” she said.

The courses get underway at the end of October and run for five weeks so staff and businesses are skilled and trained into a smooth operation in time for summer. Cost is $1385+GST per person and staff members taking part will graduate with a Level 4 National Certificate in Business First Line Management (FLM) -a valuable qualification that can be built upon with further study.

Most recently, a similar course was completed by Delta employees who learned how to apply managerial and supervisory theory to work based projects – focusing on creating efficiencies within the company, health and safety and departmental operations.
