Scholarships Available for Outward Bound Courses

Outward Bound is opening the doors for more New Zealanders to do one of its courses by making available a limited number of scholarships for people to attend a Classic Course this year.

The announcement comes at a time when the organisation is celebrating its 50th anniversary and over 50,000 kiwis having completed a course.

Outward Bound Chief Executive Officer, Trevor Taylor, said the organisation had just completed one its busiest periods, with all of its courses completely filled for January and February.

“Now through the generous support of Pub Charity we’re able to offer a set number of scholarships for more New Zealanders to unlock their full potential by attending an Outward Bound Classic Course in the Marlborough Sounds.”

The Classic Course is how Outward Bound kick-started its activities back in 1962 when it was first opened to the New Zealand public. Designed for people aged 18- 26 years of age, the Course has been a turning point for many New Zealanders.

Former All Black Norm Hewitt who is now working in the youth development field said completing a course was life-changing.

“I had always thought that Outward Bound was just for people who liked the outdoors and who wanted to try things like sailing, rock climbing, and tramping - I was totally wrong,” Norm said.

“It's one of the most amazing journeys I’ve ever been on. If you ever want to step out of your comfort zone and are looking for some direction or clarity in your life, Outward Bound is for you. It’s a personal journey that I highly recommend to people of all ages and nationalities.”

Over the years Outward Bound has expanded its courses to include specially tailored programmes to meet the needs of more New Zealanders such as: disability groups, long-term unemployed, adults, masters, ethnic leaders, partnership with Ngai Tahu, corporate leadership and emerging elite sports people. However, its 21-day Classic course remains its key offering.

Scholarships are strictly limited and available for Classic courses starting 29 April and 27 May only. Applicants are being encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Full scholarship information and application process is available at www.outwardbound.co.nz.
