Recipients
Thirteen students have been awarded Whitireia Secondary School Leaver Fee Scholarships for 2012. The students, all straight from secondary schools in the greater Wellington region have been given $4000 to go towards their first year of degree or diploma level study at Whitireia.
The students were acknowledged as this year’s recipients at a luncheon held at Whitireia recently. Staff directly associated with the students attended and congratulated them on their success. Deputy Chief Executive (Acting) Lawrence Arps addressed the students. He spoke of the value of education. “Education is the greatest gift that someone can receive” he said. “All staff at Whitireia look forward to helping and guiding you on your chosen study path and ensuring your success”.
Kathy Holloway, Dean of the Health Faculty congratulated all the students for having the courage to continue with their education. Six of the scholarship students are studying Nursing and one Social Work. “Have fun and enjoy your journey with Whitireia” she said.
This is the fourth year Whitireia has offered scholarships to secondary school students in the greater Wellington region. Over these four years a total of 80, scholarships have been awarded, each valued at $4000. Out of these 80 scholarship recipients, 13 have gone on to graduate from Whitireia with their academic qualification, three of these graduates have continued onto higher tertiary study at Whitireia and two have graduated twice.
Another seven scholarship recipients
will graduate at the end of 2012, while 40 are completing
their Whitireia diploma or degree level study.
One of the
scholarship recipients Arishma Singh, from Otaki College,
enrolled in the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood
Education). Arishma chose Whitireia due to the reputation
of the Early Childhood Education programme on offer. She
speaks highly of her study experience so far, making
particular note of the great lecturers she has on her
programme of study. “I can’t wait to become
qualified” she said.
Amy Taylor from Newlands College decided on Whitireia for her tertiary study in health. This decision was based on the recommendation of others she spoke to. “This is a great place to learn, its community focussed and has so far exceeded my expectations” she said.
This year’s scholarships were awarded for a range of programmes including Bachelor of Nursing, Diploma in Enrolled Nursing, Bachelor of Nursing (Pacific), Bachelor of Social Work, Bachelor of Information Technology, Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education), Bachelor of Applied Arts (Music) and the Bachelor of Applied Arts (Visual Arts & Design).
