First Home Deposits And One-Off Cash Payments Among Incentives To Lure Flight Instructors To New Zealand

Hamilton, New Zealand – CTC Aviation Training (NZ) Ltd has developed what it believes to be a first in the aviation industry: an innovative bonus scheme to attract top-notch flight instructors and encourage them into long-term service with the airline pilot training provider.

Instructors sticking with CTC for three years get a choice of several paid aviation training options with paid leave, or a $5000 post-tax lump sum payment.

Instructors remaining loyal with CTC for five years get the choice of either undergoing paid type rating training, $15,000 cash toward their first home in the Waikato, a $10,000 post-tax lump sum payment, or an overseas experience (OE) package.

CTC has embarked on a recruitment drive this week, targeting New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, primarily. It is looking for C-Cat, B-Cat, ME VFR and ME IFR instructors.

The flight training organisation has an immediate need to add 10 instructors to its existing team of 43 in order to prepare for growth in trainee numbers, which is expected to peak at 220 per year in September.

Over the six months, the company expects to recruit around 25 flight instructors in total.

Ian Calvert, CEO of CTC Aviation Training (NZ) Ltd, says the international recruitment drive has been necessitated due to a severe shortage of instructors available in New Zealand.

“The shortage of flight instructors is so critical that it has gotten to the point where there is only a handful of suitably qualified instructors left in New Zealand.

“We’ve had no choice but to turn our recruitment efforts off-shore and we believe the calibre of instructors available in Australia and South Africa will meet our requirements,” explains Mr Calvert.

CTC has always had high turnover of its instructor team, as for many it is a stepping stone into a career with an airline. However, turnover rates have increased significantly in recent months.

“CTC has always recognised that most of our instructors see a job with us as part of their journey as an airline pilot, not their ultimate career goal. We certainly don’t wish to hold them back from their aspirations to fly with an airline. However, due to our high forecasted growth in trainee numbers, now more than ever before we need to encourage long-term service.

“We’ve lost 33 instructors over the past two years with the majority those 33 having left in the past five months. Air New Zealand is taking the majority of our instructors, mostly to fill positions vacated by retiring pilots.

“Others have gone to regional carriers, Eagle Air and Air Nelson, and we have also lost a good number to overseas airlines, such as Cathay Pacific and Jetstar,” explains Mr Calvert.

CTC has kicked off its instructor recruitment drive in Australia and South Africa this week. It is offering relocation packages for those instructors meeting qualifications.
