Marie Finkle, a recent graduate of the Whitireia Certificate in Professional Cookery programme was today awarded a prestigious City & Guilds Medal for Excellence.
The medal was awarded for distinction in her studies in the City & Guilds, Certificate in Food Preparation, coming in the top 1% in the world. Marie managed to secure the top mark and highest distinction for her year of study.
Hundreds of students internationally, study this certificate every year. For Marie to achieve at this level is outstanding said Liz Waterhouse, Programme Manager, Hospitality, Tourism and Professional Cookery, Whitireia. “This medal is true testament to her ability in the area of culinary arts”.
A total of 60 Medals for Excellence have been awarded at this level, worldwide. It is a stunning medal a distinguished work of art that carries a lot of history and prestige with it.
The City & Guilds Medals for Excellence is a global programme that has been running for over 100 years. It recognises the achievements of students internationally who produce exceptional work, or overcome the odds to achieve their goals. The Medals for Excellence programme recognises those who achieve the best results, but also those who although not at the top of their class, go above and beyond what is expected of them and show a true journey of progression. For Marie, she was at the top of her game!
Marie attributes her success to her tutors at Whitireia. “I really enjoyed being taught professional cookery by Sonya and John, they kept me interested and challenged” she said. “Receiving this medal today cements all that I learnt at Whitireia under their leadership and the passion I have for culinary arts”.
The City & Guilds Certificate in Food preparation requires students to demonstrate skills in food safety, food preparation methods, cost control, nutrition while demonstrating good cooking techniques for boiling, poaching, stewing, steaming, braising, deep frying, shallow frying, baking and roasting, grilling and microwave cooking while understanding pastry techniques and cold food preparation.
The Certificate in Professional Cookery programme at Whitireia teaches all aspects of working in a professional kitchen. Students work towards gaining two internationally recognised City & Guilds qualifications and have an opportunity to undertake work experience. The programme runs for one year, full-time, with a new intake starting on 16 July 2012 at the Porirua campus.
